AWIS-HOI Spring 2010 Social

Friday., March 26, 2010 (4:30 - 6:00pm)

Illinois State University

Bone Student Center--McAllister's Private Dining Room

Dear ISU/IWU/Other Faculty, Staff, Students, and Guests,

We'll have hot and cold refreshments donated by our current outgoing officers. Thanks! And, we will also have some displays of our HOI activities and about AWIS and sign up sheets. Come relax and network with your colleagues. You don't have to be an AWIS-HOI member to attend this event.

Undergrad and graduate students are very welcome to participate in this and other AWIS-HOI events. Being a participating member of AWIS-HOI looks good on your vita/resume and might help you when you want to apply for some of the national AWIS scholarships and internships that are available.

Please RSVP--let Grace Johns (johns@phy.ilstu.edu) know--by Thurs., Mar. 25 (3:00pm) whether or not you will be able to join us for Friday's AWIS-HOI Spring Social to help in planning.

We have lots of food ordered, so we hope to see you there.

Friends and guests are welcome.

AWIS-HOI Elections/Appointments for 2010-2011

Also, as we start planning for next year (2010-2011), Faculty, staff, and students are urged to consider joining an HOI Committee and/or serving as an officer (1 year terms starting May 1st) on the AWIS-HOI Board:

President--serves as the main national AWIS contact for the HOI Chapter and helps in planning AWIS-HOI activities;

Vice President--represents AWIS-HOI when the President is not available and helps in planning AWIS-HOI acitivities:

Treasurer--keeps track of AWIS-HOI dues and expenditures for events; most event items are gifts-in-kind for our events, so there is not much to do here;

Communication--also receives national AWIS Chapter news; helps in providing content for the HOI web site (sponsored by ISU Physics and maintained by Grace), and assists in planning and marketing AWIS-HOI activities;

For the above elected AWIS-HOI Board positions, those eligible to serve or vote must be national AWIS members--or intend to send in their membership dues to national AWIS.

AWIS-HOI Board Planning Event Committee--individuals can either help with planning and executing a one time AWIS-HOI project or event; or you may choose to help with multiple projects or events; these are not an elected positions, people merely need to express their interest in helping out; project/event choices include:

* monthly Women in STEM Wednesdays' Forum Talks (brown bag);
* staffing an AWIS-HOI display at a university or community event;
* helping with the Spring AWIS-HOI Women in STEM Careers Pen
Pals Mentoring Project (to the high schools)
(coord. by Grace);
* helping with AWIS-HOI Fall New Faculty Welcome Luncheon planning;
* helping with the AWIS-HOI Spring Social planning;
* helping with other careers in STEM panel discussion events;
* other? new ideas are always welcome;

Undergrad and graduate students are very welcome to participate. Being a participating member of AWIS-HOI looks good on your vita/resume and might help you when you want to apply for some of the national AWIS scholarships and internships that are available.

If you can not attend the Spring Social mentioned above, but you would still like to participate on a Committee or serve on the AWIS-HOI Board, please email Grace Johns (johns@phy.ilstu.edu).

Women in STEM Wednesdays Forums are back!

A Discussion Forum by and/or about Women in Science Technology

Engineering, or Math (research, classroom pedagogies, and career mentoring)

A few Wednesdays per semester during the Fall and Spring semesters from 12 - 1:00pm at Illinois State University (309 Moulton Hall), the Association for Women in Science--Heart of Illinois Chapter (AWIS-HOI) will host a research and discussion forum--bring your lunch and drink, AWIS-HOI will supply the dessert.  Forum topics will focus on women in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) research, pedagogies for the classroom, or career mentoring related issues.

Please contact Grace Johns (johns@phy.ilstu.edu, or 438-8758) to offer to give a Women in STEM Wednesday presentation. Spring 2010 dates are available.

We encourage faculty to propose themselves or others to give about a 20 minute informal talk (with Q & A to follow) for this series.  Just contact Grace Foote Johns to learn more about it (johns@phy.ilstu.edu or (309-438-8758).

AWIS-HOI expresses our particular thanks to the ISU Physics Department for sponsoring our web site, and helping to plan these events--as well as, to ISU's Registrar's Office for sponsoring our room..
