ISU Women in STEM Wednesdays for Fall 2009 -- meet in 102 Moulton Hall (12 - 1pm)
From our wonderful AWIS-HOI Women in STEM kickoff event Sept. 30, 2009, we have several monthly research brown bag talks already lined up (bring your own lunch, AWIS-HOI will provide the dessert):
Wed., Oct. 21, 2009--Dr. Xianwei Yuan, Mathematics, CAS, will present
"An Exploratory Study of High School Students' Creativity and Matematical
Problem Posing Ability in China and the United States"
Xianwei Yuan started her Ph.D program in the Mathematics Department at
Illinois State University in August 2005. She is currently finishing her dissertation,
which is an exploratory study on high school studentsŐ creativity and mathematical
problem-posing ability in China and the United States. Xianwei got a job offer in
May, 2009, and starting on January 1st, she will be working in the Mathematics
Department as a full time elementary mathematics education tenure track faculty.
Wed., Nov. 4, 2009--Dr. Lezah Brown, Safety Program, Health Sciences, CAST
Wed., Nov. 4, 2009--Dr. Lezah Brown, Safety Program, Health Sciences, CAST
"An Examination of Violence and Unsafe Environmental Factors Reported by Home Care Workers in Chicago"This presentation will describe the incidence of violence and working in stressful environments
reported by 980 home care assistants (HCAs) working for family members, non-family members, or both categories in the Chicago area. Participants self-completed a survey in a group setting as part of an IRB-approved research protocol. Violence was measured by a question that asked if the HCAs had been scratched/punched/hit in the past 12 months and unsafe environmental factors were measured by asking about various activities the HCAs witnessed while in the clients' homes.
Wed., Dec. 2, 2009--Dr. Tasha Dunn,
Geography-Geology, CAS
"An Introduction to Meteorite Classification"
Dr. Dunn will bring some real meteorite samples to show everyone
and talk a little about the various types and what makes them
unique.

Argonne National Laboratory
Dr. Rozhkova holds a Ph.D. from the Moscow State Academy of Fine Chemical Technology. Her research
interests are at the interface of bio(in)organic chemistry and materials and life sciences. In particular, her
current projects include functional nanobio materials design and interfacial chemistry; synchrotron X-ray visualization of cellular bioenergetic processes; molecular signal transduction and cell actuation with
nanoscale materials; bio-inspired catalysis and photocatalysis; and metals in complex biological systems.

Illinois State University Physics Colloquium
"Engineering the Phospholipid Bilayer"
by
Dr. Beth Cunningham, Professor of Physics and Provost
Illinois Wesleyan University
Dr. Cunningham is an experimental condensed matter physicist who studies biologically important materials. Her current research project is on the structure and thermal properties of lipids that form two- and three-dimensional phases. She also has a strong interest in physics education and the benefits of undergraduate research experiences. Before joining IWU, she was a Professor of Physics and Associate Dean of Faculty at Bucknell Nuniversity in Lewisburg, PA.

The AWIS-HOI Celebration of 150 Years of ISU Women in STEM (from 1857 to 2007)
and AWIS-HOI / ISU Physics WOmen in STEM Career Pen Pal Mentors Recognition Ceremony
This AWIS-HOI community service event brings together women professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) from the Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, and local communities to celebrate and recognize past and future Women in STEM Careers Pen Pal Project Mentors. The Pen Pal Project each year is a partnership between AWIS-HOI Mentors and area high school students and teachers. The Recognition Ceremony today is one small way to thank them for their contributions to helping to inspire and encourage the next generation of scientists, inventors, and educators.
An additional feature of this Friday's event is that we've invited the ISU departments with colleagues being honored as Pen Pal Mentors to provide displays showcasing their educational and career opportunities. There will also be an exhibit created by AWIS-HOI and the ISU Physics Department that is a "snapshot" of the 150 years of ISU Women in Science and Math. Illinois State University has a rich history of educational excellence and AWIS-HOI and ISU Physics are proud to share this exhibit with the community. An electronic version of this exhibit will be available next week by visiting our AWIS-HOI website: www.phy.ilstu.edu/AWIS-HOI.
Finally, as a complement to our AWIS-HOI 150th event this Friday, we’ve invited the McLean County Museum of History to also provide an exhibit of their programming--especially this year's Evergreen Cemetery Discovery Walk 2007 that features a 150th ISU theme featuring legendary ISU dignitaries. Kathleen Kirk, who portrays ISU's first Librarian Ange Milner, has also graciously agreed to join us this Friday from 3:30 - 4:30pm--in costume and in character.
AWIS-HOI Especially Thanks our event Co-Sponsors: Association for Women in Science (Heart of Illinois Chapter), Dr. Carol Struck of ISU's 150th Celebration, the ISU Physics Department, the ISU Mathematics Department, the ISU University Club, and ISU's College of Arts and Sciences.
Admission is free and open to all faculty, staff, and students from the ISU and IWU campuses as well as the Bloomington-Normal community at large.

It was a wonderful event! Thanks to everyone who joined us--especially our honorees who cleared their busy schedules to do so. The other honorees who were not able to join us will receive their recognition certificate via the mail soon. AWI-HOI also thanks ISU's University Club for inviting us to host our event in their room. Please enjoy these sample pictures links below about the event.

In honor of "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day", February 23, 2006,
the Mars Public
Engagement program and NASA's Robotics Alliance Project are hosting a webcast for young people
interested in robotics
and engineering.
Do you know what engineers do? Ever wonder about all the different kinds of
engineering? Learn more
by tuning in to the
Women Working on Mars webcast!
Students will see and hear from a diverse group of women engineers from
NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory. The 40-minute production will highlight aninside look at what they thought! about engineering
when they were young and what they do now as professional engineers. A live audience and e-mail link
will provide many questions for the panelists - you can even email in your own questions and have them
answered during the
show.
Following the shows, log on to our live web chat and ask your questions directly

Canvass Bag Fundraiser
AWIS-HOI gave these home made stury canvass bags as
thank you gifts to our November 11 speakers. There was also a taller version that included a pocket for their cell phone.
We were thinking that AWIS-HOI Members and Friends might like to have one of these bags--and we might be able to make this a fundraiser. Other logo colors (such as rainbow) are available.
If you would like to obtain one of these bags for asmall donation--of $9 for the version to the right and $10 for the taller version with a cell phone pocket; AWIS-HOI dues paying members receive a $1 discount--to the AWIS-HOI funds, please contact Grace Foote Johns (johns@phy.ilstu.edu or
309-438-8758). AWIS-HOI is a tax-exempt, non profitorganization.
If you would like to help AWIS-HOI make these bags as part of our fundraiser (only ironing is required), please let us know.
