ÒAdvice from the California WIPHYS Conference on the Recruitment and Retention of Women in ScienceÓ

Amy Erxleben (right) and Alison OÕConnell (left) attended the January 2007 WIPHYS (Women in Physics) Conference held in California. They presented their science research projects on the ÒDynamics of the Chaotic Water WheelÓ and ÒModeling the Milk ExperimentsÓ, respectively. They also attended sessions on the recruitment and retention of women in sciences. Their trip was co-sponsored by the WIPHYS Conference, the ISU Physics Department, ISUÕs Graduate School, and ISUÕs College of Arts and Sciences.

Amy, a junior computer physics major at ISU is also a Physics Teaching Assistant and Secretary of the ISU Physics Club. Alison, a junior engineering physics major at ISU, is also an ISU Planetarium Assistant and Vice-President of the ISU Physics Club. Both women also participate in the ISU Physics DepartmentÕs science outreach to area schools called Physics on the Road as well as serving as physics career exploration Workshop Leaders for ISUÕs Annual Expanding Your Horizons Through Math, Science, and Technology.Conference.

Our science teacher educators promote fair and equitable treatment for all students among their teacher candidates. See how the Physics Teaching program prepares it teacher candidates to work with students with disabilities, to ensure gender equity, and to accommodate diversity within the science classroom.
