Physics Student Awards and Prizes

Our students are a talented group. This page will give you an idea of the spectrum of awards and scholarships available to Physics Department students at ISU.

National and Regional Awards

• American Physical Society (APS) Leroy Apker Award. This is the highest academic and research recognition awarded to an undergraduate physics student in the United States.
• American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) Barbara Lotze Scholarship. This is the highest national award for a student studying to become a high school teacher.
• APS Division of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics conference research award. These awards are given for excellence in research presentations at the national APS/DAMOP conference.
• AAPT Illinois Section conference reaserch awards. These awards are given for research presentations at the state AAPT conference each spring.

University and College Awards and Scholarships

• ISU Robert G. Bone Scholars. This is a senior year scholarship, the highest honor bestowed by the University, based on academic achievement and community service.
• ISU Presidential Scholarships. This is scholarship (now worth $8,000) for entering freshmen, the highest awarded by the University. It is renewable annually for four years.
• ISU Provost Scholarships. These awardees receive a $2500 scholarship which is annually renewable for four years.
• ISU Minority Academic Scholarships. These awardees receive a $5000 scholarship which is annually renewable for four years.

Physics Department Awards & Scholarships

Endowed Scholarships and Awards

• Michael F. Canney Scholarship. For a major in the physics department who can demonstrate financial need, motivation, and the entrepreneurial spirit.
  
• Robert C. Shears Scholarship. For a major in the physics department, preferably with interest and career goals in energy and environmental areas.
  
• Skadron Computational Physics Award for Research. For outstanding research in computational physics research.
  
• Skadron Computational Physics Award for Class Achievement. For top performance in computational physics courses.
  
• Skadron Computational Physics Award for Service . For service to the department or community utilizing computational science.
  
• Skadron Prize. An annual prize for the best solution to a computational physics problem.

Physics Department Awards

• Physics Outstanding Graduating Senior. For overall achievement as a senior in the Physics Department.
  
• Physics Outstanding Undergraduate. For overall achievement as a major in the Physics Department.
  
• Physics Outstanding Service. For service to the department, the university , or to the community.
  
• Physics Outstanding Teaching Assistant. For excellence as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant.
