Multicultural/Diversity Lesson Plan

Students are required to plan and teach a multicultural/diversity lesson during student teaching. While the lesson might deal with almost any pertienent subject matter, this is genearlly a very difficult lesson to teach in a physics context. So much of physics history has been (and continues to be) about the contributions of white males. While examples of female physicists can be provided, they tend to be the exception rather than the rule. With this in mind, it might be more pragmatic to help your class realize how students' own diverse backgrounds affect what, how, and how much physics they actually learn. The following elements could be included in such a lesson: (a) metacognition/self-regulation and (b) diversity (including culture and gender).

A natural means of introducing such a multicultural/diversity lesson would be as a follow-up for a first-time practice examination. Students could use this exam to self-assess and identify individual problems. They could then also use some of the resources listed below to improve their own practice.
