The Process

In order to accomplish the tasks efficiently, students will be separated into small work groups. Each member of a group should have an equal share in the workload as well as the responsibility for the project. Before you begin your work, make certain that you clearly understand the specific career/category assigned to your group, i.e. astronomy, research, forensics, engineering, etc. Be certain to review the rubrics for scoring your written work, class presentation, and group participation before you begin.

Individualized Research:

  • It is recommended that each member of a group take on the responsibility for researching a single category of “The Task” (i.e. “Job Related”, “College related”, “Gender equity and diversity related”, etc.). Once everyone is finished with their individualized research, the group should confer with one another and discuss findings.
  • Each member should research his or her chosen category using the “Resources” page. Use the questions listed on the “The Task” page to guide your research. By no means, however, limit yourself to only the questions listed. If something catches your eye as interesting that you were not aware of before, make note of it. At the conclusion of your research, you should be able to answer each question provided on the Task page at the very least.
  • Prepare a short outline of your findings for your other group members in order to inform them of your research. Make sure to keep track of resource references used for your research as well as the use of any important quotations found through out your research.

Sharing Research Findings:

  • After each member has finished the appropriate research, the group members will meet to share their findings with other group members. Class time will be provided for all groups to meet; however, there will be a limited amount of class time, so be prepared when it is time to share your research findings. Each member should take notes of the other group member’s findings. This will help to ensure that every member in the group is knowledgeable of the topics researched by the other group members and will allow every member to participate with other group discussions.

Informational Brochure:

  • Once every member has finished the appropriate research and the entire group is knowledgeable about each category, the group should produce a comprehensive informational brochure that will be distributed to all the members of the class.
  • See the "Evaluation" page in order to determine what should be included with the informational brochure. Please note that the informational brochure must include a "Works Cited" or "References" section that describes all references (e.g., books, pdf files, web pages, etc.) used in the research and preparation of the presentation findings.
  • Click here for a sample informational brochure (157 kB PDF example that does not completely satisfy recently revised evaluation criteria).

Presentation of Findings:

  • Each group will prepare an oral presentation of their findings. The oral presentation should incorporate some sort of a visual aid that helps to present the information. (Some examples of visual aids could be a poster including pictures and graphs, an overhead presentation, a PowerPoint presentation, etc.) Each group will then give their presentation to the rest of the class informing them of their findings from their research. The presentation will be evaluated using a rubric. In order to know what will be looked for in the evaluation, check the "Evaluation" page.
  • Click here for a sample PowerPoint Presentation (that might or might not satisfy all evaluation criteria).

REMINDER: All of the work involved with this project should be shared equally among every group member. This includes the research, the presentation, the summary, group contributions, as well as the oral presentation.
