Solar Car Video. (Newscaster) Physics and Technology Students at Illinois State University are busy preparing for a race car competition this summer but they are not driving your typical car. It is solar powered. About 20 students have been putting the car together since the fall so it will be ready for qualifying in May. Now if they make it the car will compete in a cross-country race from Texas to Canada this summer. Kevin Silverman - Solar Team Member: The higher we place the more the school's name gets out there. The better the car we can build next year...and we can just keep racing year after year. If we keep racing year after year we can get bigger teams. We might be able to get larger sponsors once we have gotten better cars. (Newscaster) The team needs to raise about $50,000 to cover the cost of the car and the race. So far they have raised 20,000.
