Overview
The purpose of this website is to present one of the leading topics in the technology that is nanotechnology. Quantum mechanics has brought a revolutionary age of physics since the early 20th century. It has reborn the age of discovery for physics after one of the leading researchers at the time, Sir Kelvin, thought that physics has been fully researched. Because of the discovery of quantum mechanics, physics is now one of the most advanced researched topics in the past century. Quantum mechanics has been an important part of nanotechnology due to its scale. Ever since Richard Feynman’s talk, titled “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom,” researchers began to think on a smaller scale. Feynman thought of writing the entire 24 volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica on a head of a pin. It is made possible because the area of the pin scales to the area of the pages of the encyclopedia. However, this is just a start.
With nanotechnology, the impossible will seem possible. Such as cars that will not dent or scratch, stainless clothing, prosthetic body parts, and minuscule engines. This explains why nanotechnology is a growth within all of the sciences. There are many topics that one has to look at in detail to understand what happens on the nano scale. The topic that we researched is phonons in nanocrystals. Since nanotechnology is relatively new, we wanted to make a website that can explain some basic concepts to a large audience, including students, scientists, including industrial scientists, and the general public to understand the importance and basic concepts of phonons. We will be covering such topics as the nano scale, which includes nanoscience and nanotechnology. To move on, phonons will be looked at. A brief introduction of crystal structures will be described together with a geometric figure, the tetrahedral. Symmetries will then be animated with the creation of different phonon mode. Finally, 3D simulations of phonon modes within nanocrystals with different symmetries will be illustrated.
